The God Who Writes His Own Agreements

TAKE AWAYS
Three Models of God
Model 1: The Super-soft Grandfather
• God is a benevolent gentleman.
• He’s a grandfather whose only job is to be nice and forgive.
Model 2: Deism
• God is spectacularly great. Think of the unmeasured eons necessary to travel from galaxy to galaxy at the speed of light. And how many galaxies are there? Where is the end? And God made it all! He’s bigger than all of it, incalculably huge, transcendently glorious.
• the God who is described in the Bible as incalculably loving
Model 3: Mutual Back-scratching
• This model is very common in the world of polytheism.
• Polytheism- the belief that there is more than one god.
• You scratch the god’s back, and the god scratches your back. it’s a kind of tit-for-tat arrangement: you scratch my back, I scratch yours. That’s the relationship between the gods and us.
God Can’t Be Manipulated (Acts 17:24)
• The problem with this model, of course, is that it presupposes that the God of the Bible has needs, and, therefore, you really can offer him something that he needs and wants. That’s why it’s a barter system. That’s why it’s a you scratch my back I scratch your back sort of system.
• That’s why the system works in theory in polytheism. The gods are all finite, and they do have needs.
God Doesn’t Need Us (Acts 17:25)
• Then Paul says this: “And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything” (Acts 17:25). Isn’t that remarkable? God
• Isn’t that remarkable? God doesn’t need you. He certainly doesn’t need me. He doesn’t need our praise bands.
• He doesn’t need our worship. He doesn’t need our money. He doesn’t need us
• In eternity past before there was anything, God was, and he was entirely full of joy and contentment.
We Need God (Acts 17:25)
• Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else” (Acts 17:25). We need him.
• If your heart keeps beating, it’s because God’s sanctions it. And if he ever says, “You fool, tonight your soul will be required of you,” you die.
• He owns you. He owns your life. He owns the whole planet.
• Sometimes what God does is graciously give promises of what he’s going to do so that people learn to take him at his word, to trust his word, and to look forward to what he’s going to do.
Covenants in the Ancient World
• There were different kinds of covenant in the ancient world. Sometimes you had covenants between a sovereign regional superpower and small vassal states.
• because this is a God with whom we can have a relationship, not because he has needs and wants us to sacrifice his children, but because in sovereign grace he provides a lamb. He provides a sacrifice. What he wants of us is that we turn to him wholly and say in effect, “You are God. You are Lord. You are sovereign. I am dependent upon you. I need you. I will obey you (Connection to Genesis 22)

THE GOD WHO IS THERE (PART 3)-
THE GOD WHO WRITES HIS OWN AGREEMENTS

What kind of mental model we have when we think relationship between God and human being?

MODEL 1: GOD IS A SUPER-SOFT GRANDFATHER
God is a benevolent grandfather whose “only” primary duty is to be nice and to forgive.
We only see Him as a friendly, kind, or good gentleman with long beard.

MODEL 2: GOD IS A SPECTACULARLY GREAT
God is a God who travels from galaxy to galaxy at the speed of light.
God is so incalculably huge and exceedingly glorious to give us concern about our existence here on earth.

MODEL 3: MUTUAL BOX-SCRATCHING MODEL
God is the God whom you can scratch His back so He can give you what want.
“You scratch my back, and I will scratch yours” kind-of-relationship.

You will leave in fear that God has a bad temper and didn’t answer your prayers because you haven’t scratch “appropriately”, perform “enough”, paid “enough”, perform “enough”, “paid” enough, “ and not good “enough”.

God is indeed incalculably loving and transcendent, BUT HE IS ALSO SPECTACULARLY HOLY!
He confronts rebellion, sin, and all evil!

GOD IS INTENSELY PERSONAL!
A LOT OF PERSONAL!

He is not the God who has needs and wants and our job is to offer him His needs and wants.
God did not make us because He is lonely.
God does not need us.
God does not need me.
God does not need our worship bands.
God does not need our money
God is creator and not dependent to His creation.

God is entirely full of “love, joy, and contentment.”

BUT IT DOESN’T MEAN HE WILL NOT RESPOND TO US AND DELIGHT IN US!
God is personal and we can have a relationship to a God who He is not dependent to His creation!

God graciously gives us promises (oath) of what He is going to do so we can trust His Word and look forward for His promises--- butt He is also the God who makes formal agreements (covenant). Like Abraham, the father of many nations, much damage and destructions has happened into his life, but God will take full responsibility to fulfill His covenant all by Himself! God responds according to His attributes all the time!

(Genesis 12- 17)

God is the God who writes His own agreement, but His grace is spectacularly displayed, and we can have a relationship with Him!

What He wants is for us to turn to Him wholly and say:
“You are God!”
“You are Lord!”
“You are sovereign!”
“I am dependent on you!”
“I need you!”
“I will obey you!”

We judge and pride ourselves upon our influence and accomplishments. Though gratifying, this outward superstructure is however not where our primary energies should be expended.

STRUCTURE- the supporting beams and columns—which fit together to form the framework around which the façade and usable floor area are built.
SUBSTRUCTURE- the unseen foundation, that our strength lies.
SUPERSTRUCTURE- represents the outward accomplishments of our life and ministry.

It is in the substructure, the unseen foundation, that our strength lies.

Without a deep and secure substructure, the structures cannot hold. And the superstructures cannot rise to great heights without peril. That is why more time is always spent on the foundation than on the superstructure.

WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO WHEN NO ONE SEES, FORM THE SUBSTRUCTURE OF OUR LIFE.

Superstructure is worthy only when the substructure is solid, and the surface structures are set in place—for it is upon the beauty, strength, and permanence of the superstructure depend.

WHEN WE TAKE CARE OF THE DEPTH OF OUR LIVES, GOD WILL TAKE CARE OF THE BREADTH OF OUR WORK AND MINISTRY.

Indescribable Grace
DANIEL BAGAYO

“The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy. The LORD is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭145:8-9‬

David was a man after God’s own heart yet he still fell for Bathsheba.

Are we really GOOD?

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭3:23‬

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:23‬ ‭

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:8-9‬

What was it that entitles David to be a man after God’s own heart post-bathsheba scandal? GRACE

When we encounter God’s Grace

upon our lives we are not given an excuse to sin but empowered to live victorious and holy lives.

Our encounter of God’s Grace also open an encounter for God’s Goodness

His Goodness, being an absolute nature of God compels us to gratitude in that He is never not good. In every season or storm, trial or tribulation God remains Good!

Our encounter of His goodness sets the stage for us to experience God’s Glory!

When we understand the indescribable greatness in His grace from beginning to end, when we get confronted by the unrelenting force of His goodness we can easily come to conclusion of His infinite glory!

And our best and rightful response is PRAISE!

-Communion Sunday

Scripture verse:
"The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.

    your faithful people extol."

I. Recap and Recall last Sunday's sermon points.

II. Review again the Background of Psalm 145

III. Focus on God’s Indescribable Grace
1. Defined what is grace of God?
Versus Mercy.
-Ephesians 2:8-9

IV. Why God has a indescribable grace?

1. Because of His indescribable Love and compassion
-"The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love."
-Psalm 145:8

-John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

2. Because of His indescribable Mercy and Goodness:

"The Lord is good to all;
he has compassion on all he has made." - Psalm 145:9

"In a little wrath I hid my face from you for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on you, said the LORD your Redeemer." – Isaiah 54:8

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever." -Psalm 23:6

V. The character of God's indescribable grace:
1. Slow to anger verse 8
2. Overflowing with gracious love verse 8
3. Compassion to everyone verse 9

"God's love and goodness is abundant to us. For His nature is to love us. His love is genuine and authentic. His love and mercy on us saves us from the pit of hell."

VI. Challenge:
1. Altar Call (Salvation)
2. Prayer for God's love (unconditional love and prodigal story for ministering time)

VII. Commitment:
1. Give God all the thanksgiving and praise for His indescribable grace in our lives!

VIII. Conclusion
"God's indescribable grace to us shows His nature as a God of love, mercy, goodness and compassion that is eternal and unconditional. Because of His grace and love towards us we could freely give Him all the thanksgiving, praises and glory to His name alone! For alone He has this indiscribable grace! HALLELUJAH!"
